Answering your question about Tortoise hibernation, we're in northern Virginia, and they hibernate instinctually during the coldest months of the year. Every spring, they make their reappearance, both just recently dug out in the last few weeks.

thunder and i saw dreamcatcher based on the book of the same name by stephen king.
i screamed at least three times, it stayed true to the novel and the actors were amazing.
i loved how they made jonsey's office in his mind, it was just as i had imagined it.
My husband and I both read the book (and as a long time King fan, I absolutely do NOT rank it among his best). We both enjoyed King's comments about the book, and his wife's reaction to it, though.
Of course, now I can't even think about the book, or the movie for that matter, without thinking of Tabitha King's characterization of the story as "the one with the shit-weasels".

Hi Dan,
I can recommend Tortoises pretty highly if you're looking for low maintenance, but interesting pets. Before we met, my husband had a similar desire to have other living things around, but needed low maintenance pets due to his long work hours (and I think due to his extreme dislike of cleaning up, but he'll deny that). He purchased two Russian tortoises (Max and Shelley) and they have been wonderful pets for us. They are relatively small, won't get much larger than about 8-10" in diameter, and the children are fascinated by them. They have always lived outside, he built a "pen" of sorts outside using interlocking landscape rock walls filled with a foot or two of earth, a simple shelter, and a small circulating pond (he's an overachiever, a recessed drinking bowl would work just fine too). We feed them fresh vegetables daily, they take care of their business with very little cleanup, and the best part is that dig down into the ground and hibernate all winter! One word of caution: Properly cared for, our tortoises will live upwards of about 70 years. We'll probably be willing them to the children to keep in their own yard someday.
After 8 years, two kids, and two houses later, we now have a friggin menagerie! 2 Cats, 1 Dog, 2 tortoises, 1 Iguana, 2 mice, and a whole lot of fish later, we've lost the whole "low maintenance" desire, but still enjoy our tortoises.

For example Richard Gere certainly deserved a nomination for his work in Hours but he didn't get it. Inside word in Hollywood is that the oscar people are sick and tired of his turning every platform into a polictal speech. So he got left off.No I didn't see Hours, just read about it. That's a chick flick. I'm a guy.
Richard Gere wasn't in "The Hours". He was, however, wonderful in "Chicago", and should have received a nomination. If it was the reason he didn't get nominated, I agree that his turning every speech into a platform for his standard "Free Tibet" speech is pretty darn annoying.

If you go back and read the posts you'll find that I commented directly to Polly Klaas' situation, covered the whole stockholm syndrome aspect and I think the general consensus by people not willing to jump to conclusions is that everyone is very happy she's back, regardless of the circumstances.
Let's remember that it wasn't long ago that overzealous cries of guilt and demands for justice once had an entire country looking for phantom criminals who "abducted" Susan Smith's children. In this case, it led to a man who did NOT abduct her being jailed and subsequently dying. Like it or not, everything is not always as it seems. The media went after that man with a vengeance and everyone assumed him totally guilty, and now they just shrug it off with an "Oh Well".
PS The latests is the abductor had a knife and that he did cut the screen and he had been watching her for sometime before he took her.Several weeks ago CBS had an update special on Elizabeth's disappearance and the lead investigator said that the cut screen was most likely NOT the method of entrance into the house since there was no evidence (tracks, fiber evidence, prints, etc) that anyone had done anything but cut the screen. In his opinion, the cut screen was to divert attention away from the fact that the door was probably used, and the intruder most likely had a key to gain access. Right now, when we know so little of the specifics, it's probably a good idea to wait before blindly believing whatever the media is saying.

As to the point you were trying to make, it's apples and oranges. You absolutely cannot compare acts that are consensual and have absolutely no direct effect on anyone but the willing participants. Just because there are people in this world who get off on being tied up and whipped by another person who just loves to do the whippin' does not then mean that we can say it's OK for criminals to violently assault other people.
The point is that you can be personally outraged by homosexuality from some long-held wacky religious belief, you can think to yourself "Ooh, Ick!" all you want, you can even believe that it's unnatural and wrong and vile and evil. And then you can take a breath, calm down, and realize that it doesn't affect you in the least. That's the moment when you realize that you've finally gotten over your little self.
